A message that stuck with me after this morningā€™s learning was not focusing on the big picture. Indigenizing and decolonizing schools and education is too big to think about. Just like saving the environment. The advice of Dustin Louie was to focus on the little things you can do. Just like with the environment, you can focus on the small things. Like recycling. Or picking up garbage once a year.

My call to action after this morning (or rather, my great idea for responding to this morningā€™s learning) was indigenizing my morning check in with the students. Iā€™d like to start my class with a welcome and short story sharing. Small stories. Focusing on the students being heard, honored, and valued in the community that is our classroom. This is designed around two of the FPPL:

ā€œLearning is embedded in memory, history, and story.ā€ ANDĀ ā€œLearning ultimately supports the well-being of the self, the family, the community, the land, the spirits, and the ancestors.ā€
